Sexual Safety Charter

The Sexual Safety Charter is a set of ten commitments that Practice Plus Group has adopted. The charter was launched by NHS England and is the first of its kind. Signatories to the charter commit to taking and enforcing a zero-tolerance approach to any unwanted, inappropriate and/or harmful sexual behaviours within the workplace, and to ten core principles and actions to help achieve this.

Freedom to Speak Up

Within Practice Plus Group we are committed to providing outstanding healthcare and safeguarding patients and staff. As part of this commitment we have trained a number of our staff to become Freedom to Speak Up champions, overseen by three Freedom to Speak Up Guardians. Freedom to Speak Up (FTSU), is a national programme which encourages a positive culture where people feel their voices will be heard, and their suggestions acted upon. Evidence clearly indicates that speaking up protects patient safety and improves the lives of workers.

This initiative encourages and empowers staff to challenge anyone, including senior colleagues, who may be putting patients at risk with their behaviour and promotes professional accountability within Practice Plus Group, highlighting any behaviour which undermines a culture of safety.

Elements of the scheme include graded assertiveness training for all staff and a feedback platform to report both positive and negative experiences, all of which equip the teams with the confidence to speak up.

What is speaking up?

It is about speaking up about anything that gets in the way of doing a great job.

Freedom to Speak Up Guardians and Champions support workers to speak up when they feel that they are unable to in other ways.

There are over 1,000 Freedom to Speak Up Guardians in the NHS and independent sector organisations, national bodies and elsewhere.

25,382 cases raised (1 April 2022 to 31 March 2023)

Why speak up?

Speaking up protects patient safety and improves the lives of workers.

When things go wrong, we need to make sure that lessons are learnt and things are improved.

If we think something might go wrong, it’s important that we all feel able to speak up so that potential harm is prevented.

Even when things are good, but could be even better, we should feel able to say something and should expect that our suggestion is listened to and used as an opportunity for improvement.

Freedom to Speak Up is about encouraging a positive culture where people feel they can speak up, their voices will be heard, and their suggestions acted upon.
