Not all health in justice happens behind a locked door. Our non-custodial services work with people at every stage of the justice pathway – in police custody, in court, and in the community – addressing the mental health, neurodiversity and substance misuse needs that so often underlie offending behaviour.
Operating across Yorkshire and Humber so far, our teams provide early intervention and tailored support that diverts people away from custody where appropriate, and reconnects them to community-based care upon leaving. It’s a whole-pathway approach that’s making a real difference to people’s lives.
Understanding non-custodial services
People who enter the justice system often do so with mental health or neurodiversity needs which have never been properly identified or addressed. When those needs go unrecognised, the consequences ripple outwards for the individual, their family, and the wider community.
Our approach places the individual at the centre. We work to understand the personal, social and economic factors that contribute to offending behaviour, and we build supportive, constructive pathways that follow people throughout their journey — from the point of first contact with the justice system, through any period of custody, and into life beyond it. That means tailored assessments while people await trial, and continuity of support as they transition back into the community.
Why work in non-custodial care?
This is care with real purpose. Joining our non-custodial team means working with people at genuine turning points in their lives to offer the kind of early, person-centred intervention that can change outcomes before they escalate.
